Polk County Home A Virtual Cemetery created by: lin8kin
Description: The Polk County Home was located at 5841 N.E. Fourteenth St., Saylor Township, Polk Co., Iowa (just outside Des Moines city limits). Residents seem to have been a mix of the poor, indigents and mentally ill persons. The Home had separate hospital buildings for men and women, which were closed before the Home closed. In the late 1800s to early 1900s residents were buried on the grounds. This cemetery apparently was never within county cemetery laws and a court-ordered exhumation took place in Aug 1971. 77 bodies were removed to Pine Hill Cemetery where they were reinterred in Lot 23, near the cemetery office. One small, flat gravestone commemorates all the deceased. The Home was torn down in 1972.We remembered the Home, but had trouble finding information about it. The Iowa Genealogical Society has a cemetery book on the Polk County Home with a list of those who were buried there & the info about Pine Hill Cemetery. We also searched Des Moines Register newspaper articles & found more info and photos. I've forwarded those to the Polk County Historical Society hoping they will have info about the Home on their website.
