John Burkhart, his wife and his children A Virtual Cemetery created by: Kathie L. Webb Blair
Description: John Burkhart (1787-1856) and Rebecca (Baltzell) Burkhart (1800-1884) are my great, great, great grandparents. They were blessed with 12 children and in 1847, ten of those children (the other 2 were deceased), their spouses and one grandchild left from Des Moines, Iowa and walked and rode the Oregon Trail, arriving in the new township of Albany, in the Oregon Territory on Oct 16, 1847. Life was not easy and two of his children died before 1860. John, himself, died in 1856 at the age of 69 yrs., three years before his beloved Oregon was granted statehood. {Oregon became a state on February 14th, 1859} One of his children was Leander Columbus Burkhart, my great, great grandfather. He had six children, my great grandmother, Nellie Olivia, among them. They and their children and their children's children all helped to make Oregon the wonderful place that it is today. They were Pioneers.
