American Legion Post 237

The Lizton American Legion Post 237 was opened after World War I and designated the Horace R. Baker Post in honor of Horace Baker who gave his life in defense of his country in World War I. The Post reached its peak membership after World War II when many of the Union Township men who served in that war returned home and joined the Post. The post-World War II years also saw the building of the Post's building on the site of the current location of the State Bank of Lizton. A photo of the building may be seen at Horace Baker. The Post sponsored a local Lizton High School boy's attendance at the annual Boy's State in Bloomington. The men of the Post, together with the women of the Auxiliary, held an annual fish fry during a summer Friday and Saturday night. As the years went by, the Post membership declined eventually leading to the Post's closing. The Post's land and building were sold to the State Bank of Lizton which tore down the building and erected their present Lizton office in 1973.
