B-25H #PBJ-89050 'The Badin Bomber' Lt McDaniel Crew - Badin Lake, NC on 08 June 1944 - PBJ-1-H-89050 crashed into Badin Lake on 8 June 1944 at 1245 hours carrying Pilot 2nd Lt. Charles Merton McDaniel, USMC and CoPilot Ens. John Earl Withrow, USNR. They were ferrying the new plane from Ohio to Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. The pilots decided to land at Morris Field in Charlotte, NC and spend the night in McDaniel's nearby hometown of Palmerville so that McDaniel could visit his wife of only seven months. In a prearranged signal McDaniel agreed to circle the little town of Palmerville several times. On the third time, they heard a sputtering sound and a loud explosion. They never saw the plane or its occupants again.
