Tornado in La Plata, Md. Nov. 9, 1926

La Plata, Md. has suffered 2 tornadoes, the oldest back in Nov. of 1926. That twister killed 13 children when it destroyed the local public school, which had 59 children in it that day. Two adults died as well. Some reports have higher numbers but the names can't be found. Many more were injured. Today there's a bronze plaque listing the names of the children on display at the local middle school. On Nov. 11, 1926 funeral services were held for most of the victims, at the 2 churches in town. 400-500 cars clogged the streets. Each child had 2 white roses placed upon their chests by the staff at the school. Funerals for the others were held the next day. One of the young was sent back home to rural Virginia for services, to where she resided; she had been visiting her relatives in La Plata. The College of Southern Maryland has a special section devoted to the findings of this event. I merely grouped together the names of the deceased I have found and with the help of many others I've posted the names online here. And it's an ongoing thing. In 1926, technology was just starting it's rapid advancement during that century but at least 15 people died. In 2002, 5 people died in that storm, despite all the advancements in weather forecasting and early warnings that have been devised and implemented since 1926.
