Chehalis Shipwreck
A Virtual Cemetery created by: Kathy Margrave
Description: Chehalis and Princess VictoriaThe Seattle-Vancouver steamer Princess Victoria ran down the small steamer Chehalis in Vancouver harbor. Vancouver's Maritime Museum web site has this account: "On July 21, 1906, Vancouver witnessed its worst shipwreck when the CPR's Princess Victoria rammed and sank the Union Steamship Chehalis, which had crossed the larger steamer's bows. As horrified passengers on Princess Victoria watched, the tiny wooden steamer was crushed and chopped up by their ship's propellers. Out of fifteen aboard Chehalis, only eight survived, plucked from the cold water by Brockton Point lighthouse keeper William Jones. Other than those bodies, a few fragments of wood . . . were all that was recovered. To this day, the wreck of Chehalis has never been found." The captain of the Princess Victoria claimed that the strong tide swung the Chehalis across his bow before he could prevent the collision.
