John "Johnny Appleseed" Petroff was a former Marion Indiana school teacher known in the Grant County community as Johnny Appleseed and Mr. Wal-Mart. He died when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a truck. He was pronounced dead soon after the accident occurred at 10:30 a.m. on Ind. 18 near Miller Ave. in Marion. According to police, Petroff attempted to cross from the south to the north side of the highway on his bicycle when the accident occurred.
Mr. Petroff played Johnny Appleseed in many plays for elementary schools in the Grant County area. After retiring from teaching, he worked at Wal-Mart in Marion and was a greeter there for many years. He drove a golf-cart known as the "Wal-Mart Taxi" in the parking lot at Wal-Mart to bring shoppers to the door and would even wear costumes for Halloween.
Friends of Mr. Petroff dedicated a flowering dogwood and plaque along the Riverwalk in Mississinewa Park by the Mississinewa River in Marion to remember him by. His wife Fran has also created a scholarship in his memory.
John is buried in the family plot of his wife's parents, Milton & Josephine Murphy.
John is a US Navy veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War.
