According to a dear friend, Herschel was passionate about flying, so much so that after his sophomore year in college, he decided to join the Navy to become a Navy pilot. He was due to report just two weeks after the time of his death. Herschel was killed when a plane, in which he was taking lessons,crashed due to an aerobatics accident immediately after takeoff with the instructor at the controls.
