Jackie Gene Rucker, 71, Miami, Okla., died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at his home following a long illness. He was born July 11, 1932, at Fletcher, Okla., the son of Thomas H. and Madie King Rucker. He was a Baptist. In 1954 he joined the Northeastern A&M College faculty as an English instructor and VIKING yearbook sponsor. He taught English for 45 years and served as yearbook advisor until 1978. In 1956 he began coaching NEO’s women’s AUU basketball team and men’s and women’s track teams. He coached women’s basketball from 1956 to 1960 with an 88-24 overall record and produced two All-American players in Gail Ivey and Dixie Woodall. He coached both track programs from 1956 until 1968 and produced 28 All-American runners. In 1958 he became the first director of National Junior College Athletic Association Region II, which had 12 teams across Oklahoma. He served as regional director until 1972. In 1960 he served three years as director of the teen center, “The Mutt Hut,” located at the Miami Civic Center. In 1970 he served as chair of the communications division, which included eight academic programs and eight faculty. In 1981 he was selected “Teacher of the Year” by the NEO student body. In 1989 he was named chair of the communications/fine arts division, which included 12 academic programs and 14 faculty. In 1999 he retired after serving as a member of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College faculty longer than anyone in the 90-year history of the institution. He was a member of Pi Beta Kappa and HEACO. He married Delores Ann Conrad May 5, 1970, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Stephen Rucker and Thomas Van Rucker, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Jennifer Ann Rucker, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Jacquline Kay Gosvener, Sapulpa, Okla.; and one brother, Jim Bob Rucker. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and by a sister. He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Graveside services, under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenleaf Cemetery in Tahlequah, Okla. James M. Ogle, minister, will officiate.
