Served with the 335th Engineers during the War with Japan 1941-45 (aka WWII). He died on August 17, 1945 of wounds received earlier in action on July 12, 1945. He was 22 years of age. After the war, his body was shipped home so now he rests in the sweet sod of his home state of Nevada. The soldier who left for war was returned less we forget this man who gave up all his tomorrows for all your todays. Rest in Peace, noble warrior; your duty's done and a grateful nation thanks you for it. The attached photos of Gillis are courtesy of the local VFW who was kind enough to let me copy it from their "Roll of Honor" Wall of the boys who didn't come home. The photo was taken in California in 1942, just before he went overseas. The other photo post card, which shows Gillis sitting on a large pile of Japanese helmets, has a message on the back which reads: "These Japs took a Wack and none of them are ever coming back - Don't worry I saved a real nice one for you - your loving son, Gilly." It's addressed to his parents in Gardnerville and its dated June 12, 1945. (Both of them have since passed on and I think they are buried in unmarked graves).
