| Birth: | Feb. 20, 1918 Lancashire, England | | Death: | Apr. 29, 1943, Tunisia |  Lawrence, Age 25, was Killed in Action, at Medjez-el-bab, Tunisia, whilst Serving with the the British Forces and with the 1st Bn, Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, Allied Forces 1st Army.He is buried in the Massicault War Cemetery at Tunis, Tunisia, which is situated 25 kilometres south - west of Tunis on Route P5 to Medjez-el-Bab. On three of its sides there are cornfields and on the fourth, across the road, there is an olive grove. The Cemetery contains 1,578 Commonwealth Burials of the Second World War, 130 of them unidentified. Many of those buried here died in final drive to Tunis in April 1943. Masses were said for Lawrence at Our Lady's Church Portico,St Helens. My Wife Constance and I visited his Grave in Tunisia in the 1980's. _____________ His Grave is Plot 2. Row B. Deep in Our Hearts Your Memory is kept We who loved you Will never forget. _____________ He was the Son of Mary Ellen and The Late Thomas Hilliard, and was Born at 18 Annie Street, Greenbank, St Helens, Lancashire, England. He had Sisters Honorah & Elizabeth,and a Brother John. Lawrence was engaged to be married to Irene Redman of West Derby Liverpool.

The 1st Battalion arrived in North Africa in March 1943, and fought well. They were involved in several attacks including that on Peter's Corner and later in one against Cactus Farm. Its casualties were 16 officers and 317 other ranks. _____________________
