Jean was born in Scotland and was the daughter of Elizabeth Miller (born in 1820, Wicke, Scotland. Died May 7, 1896) and Robert Campbell (born in 1830 in Ireland and died May 27, 1877). She married Nathaniel Heaney on February 16, 1868 in Newtown, Long Island, New York. Their children include Isabelle Jennie, Louise (Louise Heaney Snyder), Edwin L., Charles, Alfred, Nathaniel, William, Robert Campbell, and Arthur Dale.
