He was born in Trier, Prussia and emigrated to the USA in 1854. He married Caroline Froeschle in 1857, Dayton, OH. He was a tanner and resided in Ohio until about 1870 when he settled in Williamstown WV and established a tannery.
While still in Germany he was a member of the kaiser's bodyguard.
