He was the son of Wade Ethridge and Talitha Walker Ethridge. He enlisted in The Confederate States Army when he was 18 years old on Aug 17, 1861 in Abbeville County, SC. Company G, 14th Regiment, SC Volunteers. He was wounded when he was 19 years old in The Battle of Fredericksburg, VA. Dec 11-15, 1862.
Under the command of Robert E Lee, The Battle of Fredericksburg was an overwhelming Confederate victory. The huge losses suffered by the Union Army at the battle of Fredericksburg brought an early end to the Union's Army campaign to take the CSA Capital of Richmond, VA.
James Ethridge was wounded by a gun shot on the third day of battle Dec 13, 1862, which required amputation of his right leg. His leg was amputated by a surgeon in a battlefield hospital. He was found unfit for duty on Dec 31, 1862 and was discharged Jan 4, 1864. His discharge papers record his physical appearance as light complexion, blue eyes, 5 ft 9 in tall, and dark hair.
After the war, He married Mary Elizabeth McCool on Dec 19, 1867 and they had three children. He died Aug 15, 1914 at the age of 71. His obituary stated that he was a good soldier in fighting the battles of his country and was on the right side in civil life. He was buried in Rehoboth Methodist Church where he had been a consistent member.
