My Grandpa Walter was a disabled veteran of World War II, having suffered a severe shoulder injury while serving in the U.S. Army. Once he returned home to Charlottesville, VA, he worked as a short order Cook at the Dixie News stand and as a Floral Arranger at Davis Florist in Charlottesville, VA.
In 1975 Grandpa was hit by a car while walking to work. He spent a year between the hospital and rehab. From then on he walked with a cane or walker, having had multiple injuries.
After the accident, Grandpa came to live with my Mom and I. I have fond memories of him making me ice cream out of snow and letting me read him Green Eggs & Ham over and over. It was the first book I was able to read on my own. He was a very willing and patient audience. I remember talking to him about old movies, when I became a fan of Ingrid Bergman's. We used to watch Wrestling on television and As The World Turns. I also remember that he used to grow snake plants on his patio. He also taught me how to play Solitaire, the old school way with an actual deck of cards, before the computer game. I often wish he had been around to know my Yorkshire Terrier Beausoleil. He would have spoiled Beausoleil and she would have eaten it up!
He is remembered as a compassionate person who loved animals, especially cats. He loved to read the New York Daily News, and he also liked to tell jokes and spend time with his brothers.
He is forever in our hearts, but sorely missed everyday.
