♥ ♥ ~ My Uncle Steve ~ ♥ ♥
Steve was the second of seven children, and the oldest son. According to Greek custom, he was named for his paternal grandfather, Stavros Dimitrios Panagakos. His namesake is his nephew, Steve William Panagakos. In 1942 Steve graduated from James M Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. He wanted to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, but knew that he didn't meet the height requirement - Steve was only 4 ft. 11 inches tall. He decided to put on his thickest socks and a pair of shoes with a higher heel, and went to the recruitment office. However, they made him remove his shoes and socks, dashing his hopes of enlisting.
His first job was working at the Okonite Corporation. Then he worked as a cook at his father's restaurant – The Faust – located on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. He also worked for a while at the Hankins Container Company in Elmira, New York. He was last employed by the Wyoming Valley Garment Company as a machine operator. He was a member of the Joint Council Board of Amalgamated Textile and Clothing Workers Union, serving as a board member for seven years.
On June 10, 1951, he married Mildred Kivler Dale. The wedding took place at his parents' home at 45 Myers Court in Wilkes-Barre, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Willie Wharton, were the matron of honor and best man. The couple had no children. Family links: Parents: Constantine Stavros Panagakos (1895 - 1979) Cora May Oakes Panagakos (1904 - 1986) Spouse: Mildred Kivler Panagakos (1911 - 1990)
