He was born July 17, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Ralph Leroy Poertner and Helen (Schlemper) Musenbrock. He was married December 2, 1982, in Osage Beach, Missouri to Rebecca (Combs) Wilkins.
He loved reading and working on cars. He was a Hazardous Material Specialist for the Department of Public Safety. He was a Vietnam and Gulf War, Iraqi Freedom veteran, serving in the United States Air Force. He was awarded two purple hearts and several other awards. He was a former news director of KLOZ Radio, where he met Becky. He was a former editor of the Reveilli Newspaper and a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church.
Survivors includes: his wife, Rebecca Poertner of the home, four sons, Ian Poertner and wife, Claudia, St. Louis, Missouri; Jay Wilkins, Springfield, Missouri; Sam Poertner, St. Charles, Missouri; and Joe Poertner of the home; his mother, Helen Musenbrock, O'Fallon, Missouri; two sisters, Emily Trantham, O'Fallon, Missouri; and Janet Williams, O'Fallon, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his father, and a son, Christopher Poertner.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2004 at Eldon United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2004 at the church with Rev. Michael Keith officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Pacific, MO.
