John was the sixth born of Michael Luther and Amanda Jane (Taylor) Devin. His newlywed wife was accidently shot by a family member and he never remarried.
John was a Civil Engineer and was Superintendent of the American Bridge Company in New Haven, Connecticut. He was a handsome man, beloved by the family and a great story teller to the children. After he injured his back from a fall from a bridge under construction, he returned to Des Moines to be with family.
