Mary Clare Donnelly Minges was born August 8, 1933 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. She and her twin brother, who died hours after their birth, were the first children of the late Thomas James Donnelly and the late Clare Cecilia "Ceil" Meiners Donnelly. In addition to her twin, Thomas J. Donnelly, Mary had a younger sister, the late Anne "Nancy" Roger Donnelly Riley (wife of Thomas Norman Riley), a younger brother, the late Thomas Meiners Donnelly (husband of Mary Margaret Stauber Donnelly, deceased); and another younger sister, Catherine "Katie" Theresa Donnelly (O'Fallon) (wife of William G. O'Fallon).
DNA testing reveals Mary and her direct female ancestors and their brothers and direct female descendents and their brothers are of the clan of "Helena" (mtDNA haplogroup H) who lived 20,000 years ago in the Dordogne region of southwest France near the present city of Perpignan on the Mediterranean, gathering oysters and hunting and creating cave paintings.
The Donnellys are descended from the powerful Irish clan of Ui Neill who claimed the High Kingship of Ireland from the 7th to the 11th century AD. Mary was especially proud of her Irish heritage and got to visit the home of her Heffernan ancestors in Ireland.
Mary was a devout Catholic and a graduate of the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Hamilton County. Before marrying, she taught for a year at Mother of Mercy School in Cincinnati. Later in life, she worked with her sons Mark and Pete at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home in Cincinnati. She volunteered at her church, Saint Catharine of Siena; with Mother of Mercy High School; with the Auxiliary of Mercy St. Francis Hospital; and so much more. Just some of the words friends and family have used to describe Mary include: loving, generous, warm, gracious, upbeat, encouraging, charming, industrious, and hospitable.
On May 8, 1954 Mary married the late James Raymond Minges, a fourth-generation funeral director, and they had six children: Mary Ann "Sugie" Minges, Mark G. Minges (husband of Robin Anne Grierson-Minges, deceased), Timothy Edward Minges (husband of Penelope "Penny" D. Brenner Minges); Peter J. Minges (husband of Debra A. Kise Minges), Mary Jane Minges (Keating) (wife of Larry Keating), and Mary Sue Minges Polanka (wife of Marc Polanka). Mary was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother and a friend to everyone.
On October 17, 2013 at the age of 83 she died at home in Cincinnati. The funeral was at Saint Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Cincinnati, with burial near her parents at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati.
