Dean was one of three triplets born to Russell Laymance and Myrtle Cora Painter. He was the triplet brother of Donald Wayne Laymance, who died 3 days after they were born. At the age of 19, Dean and a friend, Donald Morrarity, rented a plane for a leisurely day. They both died in a plane crash over Alta Lake. Dean had been home on leave from the Navy.
