James Harris was the father of my friend, Gary. It was only after his death that I learned he was a hero. I've never known of anyone who received two Purple Hearts! It is with honor and respect that I place here the memorial site of James Harris.
James L. Harris, 72, died Saturday morning, January 8, 2005, at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.
Jim was born on March 20, 1932 in Carbondale, Illinois to Francis and Mary (Treece) Harris.
On December 26, 1950, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood and was assigned to combat duty in Korea. He was awarded numerous service and campaign medals, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Heart Medals. After serving in Korea, Jim was assigned to Camp Haven, Wisconsin.
Jim married Marion A. Schils in Westfield, Indiana on July 24, 1954, and shortly thereafter began working for the Kohler Company, Kohler, Wisconsin, in the Power House. Jim retired from Kohler as a supervisor after 50 years, working the entire time at the Power House.
Jim loved to work around the house and on old cars (there was always a project in the works) and spend time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Marion, of Plymouth, Wisconsin, four sons and two daughters, Gary (Ann) Harris of Howards Grove, Wisconsin, Dennis Harris of Des Plaines, Illinois, Jane (Mike) Kregel of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Randy (Kris) Harris of Howards Grove, Wisconsin, Thomas (Gail) Harris of Plymouth, Wisconsin, and Colleen (Rick) Meyer of Plymouth, Wisconsin, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, two half-brothers, three half-sisters and one grandson.
Private funeral services were held on January 10, 2005, at the Chapel of Eternal Light in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Entombment followed the service. The Rev. Kevin R. Loughran officiated.
Jim is greatly missed by his family and friends.
