| Birth: | Jun. 5, 1978 Sheboygan Sheboygan County Wisconsin, USA | | Death: | Mar. 13, 1983 Milwaukee Milwaukee County Wisconsin, USA | Becky was the apple of her parents' eyes. An only child, she was born on a sunny day on June 5, 1978, to Jeffrey J. Wirtz (b. 12/24/49) and the former Lori J. Nash (b. 8/9/51). She was the healthiest child imaginable, never even getting a cold. In October of 1981 at the age of three she was shockingly diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia). In December of that year, when she lost her long beautiful hair to chemotherapy, she looked in the mirror, shrugged her shoulders and said, "Well, at least I'm still cute!" That has become a famous "family saying" to anyone who is going through a difficult time.
In December of 1982 she was the first unrelated bone marrow recipient in the state of Wisconsin, receiving bone marrow from Judy C. of Shorewood, Wisconsin. The donor, Judy, was a stranger at the time, simply doing a good deed. The bone marrow transplant was a success, but sadly, Becky passed away from an infection due to having no immune system in preparation for the transplant. Judy and Becky's mother, Lori, remain friends after all these years.
Becky died at 10:30 p.m. in Lori's arms on March 13, 1983, at Milwaukee Children's Hospital. Her parents, Jeff and Lori, were divorced shortly after her death and neither of them ever had any other children.
Becky was an "old soul", wise beyond her years, and always put others before herself. Her memory lives on through those who knew and loved her, and those who hear about this wonderful, precious child.
She is buried in the Sheboygan Falls Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, next to her grandfather, Leonard L. Nash (1921 - 1980) who was a well known and beloved teacher in the Sheboygan Falls School District. He died of Lymphoma at the young age of 58.
