Amos was the son of James & Sarah Cross Tracey. His grandparents were: John & Elizabeth Cooper Cross and Warnel & Noty Tracey. Amos' siblings were: Elizabeth, Salem, Annie, John, Mary, James, Gilson, Curtis & Ellen Tracey.

On 11/1/1836 Amos married Cassander Hampshire in Baltimore and they relocated to Ohio where they had the following children: Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, James Franklin, George Washington, Martha Ellen, John David, twins Jasper Newton & Justus Wilson, twins Benjamin Preston & Alice, William Arthur, Edward Amos, Margareta and Ella Tracey.
