DAVENPORT - Velira Mae McDowell, 98, of Davenport, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Jersey Ridge Place, Davenport.

Burial in Davenport Memorial Park.

Mrs. McDowell was born in 1911 in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, to Harry and Carrie Dodds. She married Alan J. McDowell on February 19, 1937, in Rock Island. He died April 28, 2001. For 21 years she worked as the manager of Fannie Mae Candies, Duck Creek Plaza, Bettendorf, retiring in 1977. Her memberships included St. Paul Lutheran Church, Camp Fire Girls, of which she was a director, and the Quad-City Times Plus 60 Club. She and her husband spent many enjoyable years in Florida and traveling together. Velira enjoyed crafting and sharing what she had made with others.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Alan Jr. and Judy McDowell of Davenport; and grandchildren, Jill Weitzel, Lee McDowell and Michael McDowell and his partner Ryan Moore. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Vivian Criswell, Viola Boege and Velma Bowker and five brothers; Roland, Ralph, Ruel, Jesse and Harry Dodds.
