Ruth Ann grew up among a large extended family in southeastern Minnesota. She graduated from Forest Lake High School in Minnesota.
Ruth Ann moved to Coos Bay, Oregon, with her parents in 1944. Ruth Ann graduated from the Eugene Business College and took accounting courses at the University of Oregon. She worked first as a bookkeeper for a local medical practice, then as an accountant for Willamalane Park and Recreation District for 18 years.
Ruth Ann loved to travel and she had a particular fondness for rugged mountain scenery. She planned family camping vacations to national parks around the western U.S. and Canada. Following retirement, Ruth Ann and her husband, Robert, traveled extensively around the U.S. and on cruises.
