SPRINGFIELD — James Rufus Cornell of Springfield died Oct. 16 of age-related causes. He was 89. No service is planned. He was born May 22, 1923, in Big Pine, Calif., to Rufus and Mary Ingram Cornell. He was married to Ruby Wooley from August 1997 to June 2006. She died previously. He was married to Betty Joy Langley from February 1970 to December 1996. She died previously. He served in the Navy from January 1941 to May 1946 and was stationed on the USS Columbia and USS Honolulu. He worked as a police officer in Cottage Grove and for the Lane County Sheriff's Office, and also worked as a truck driver. He played accordion in his band, Country Squires, and performed for more than 20 years at the Vets' Club and other venues.

Survivors include two daughters, two stepsons, a stepdaughter, 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. A son, Kenneth Cornell, died previously. Arrangements by Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield.
