When Richard arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. He was died during combat at Hill 881N and 9 kilometers West Northwest of Khe Sanh Airfield.

Survived by his parents, Elmer C and Dorothy Schmitz and his sisters Laurel, Delia and Dee Dee and his grandmother; Stella Korenowsky, all of 5503 South Blvd, Maple Heights, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at St Wenceslas Church. Gravesite services conducted by Thomas Funeral Home.
