Irene (Sampson) Butterfield, the daughter of Martin O. and Johanna (Lilland) Sampson, was born September 15, 1912, in Huxley, Iowa. She passed away Friday, August 28, 2009, at Bickford Cottages in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 96.
Irene moved with her family as a young child to Swea City, Iowa. She attended rural school in Kossuth County and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1930.
On January 7, 1934, Irene was united in marriage to Fred G. Butterfield at Huxley, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Swea City area until 1945, when they moved northwest of Dolliver, Iowa, where they farmed until 1976. The couple spent over 23 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona. In 1979, the couple moved into Estherville, Iowa, to make their home. Irene loved cooking and baking and her favorite spot in their home was their kitchen. She especially loved baking bread and pies. Fred died December 19, 2003. In 2007, Irene moved to Fort Dodge to be closer to her family.
Irene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville.
Left to cherish Irene's memory are one daughter, Marilyn Harder of Fort Dodge, Iowa; one son, John Butterfield and his wife, Peggy of St. Paul, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Kathy Khommanyvong, husband, Lee of Rockwell City, Iowa; Steve Harder, his wife, Denae of Spring Valley, Minnesota; Ann Reid, husband, Robb of Edina, Minnesota; Jason Butterfield, his wife, Liz of Mayer, Minnesota; Jill Grimmelman, her husband, Dave of Woodbury, Minnesota; eleven great-grandchildren, Sara, David, Jadyn, Shawn, Jordan, Trenton, Jacob, Rachel, Alex, Ellie and Anna; brother, Orville Sampson of Estherville; sister, Wilma Nelsen of Estherville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Irene in death were her husband; parents; son-in-law, Eldo; sister, Edna Larson; and brothers, Harold, Lloyd and Milford
