Jerusha Edwards was the daughter of Rev. Jonathan Edwards, a leading American theologian and pastor, and his wife Sarah (Pierpont) Edwards. She was also engaged to David Brainerd, a prominent American missionary. She nursed David in his final illness, contracted tuberculosis from him, and died a few months after him. She is buried by his side.

Jerusha died when North America was subject to the Julian calendar (until Jan. 1, 1752). The actual date of her death in the Northampton town records is Feb. 14, 1747/8, the same double year date that would be written as a historical reference in the modern Gregorian calendar. When Jerusha died she was only 17 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 18.
