Per cemetery records, James A Penn of Company L, 10th Alabama Regiment, born unknown, died 2/13/1863, is buried in Soldiers Section D, site 266. This is an overview of Soldiers Section D at Hollywood Cemetery, looking inward from one corner, block D in the foreground. I walked the entire section to be sure, and as you can see that there are only a dozen or so markers in this entire section, and sadly none say Penn or anything similar. Finding none is not unusual. Near the fall of Richmond, casualties were brought to Richmond by trains and carts in a steady flow. Burials were hasty and marked not by name but by numbered boards, later replaced with numbered granite blocks which each represent a row of burials. The only markers that exist today are markers that were placed at a later date by descendants, and in the case of your soldier we find none. If you are interesting in placing a marker for him, the Hollywood Cemetery office can assist you.
