"Pete" Carlile was a pumpman on the Merchant Marine vessel "Benjamin Brewster". The "Benjamin Brewster" was attacked by two torpedoes from the German U-67 on 09 Jul 1942 off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana. The ship made it back to land, but not before six officers, eighteen crewmen and one armed guard died. There were fifteen survivors, but the ship was a total loss.

On 16 Jul 1943, while in the Sargasso Sea, the U-67 was attacked and sunk by depth charges from an Avenger aircraft which was from the US escort carrier USS Core ( VC-13).
