CHADRON - Winona "Nonie" or "Tink" V. Mundt Brecht, 78, formerly of Chadron, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. She was born May 17, 1914, at Berea. Her parents were William and Viola (Haeffner) Mundt. She attended School District No. 13 in Berea until the 10th grade; and graduated from Alliance High School in 1932. After graduation, she was employed at Box Butte County Courthouse. She was married to Lloyd Jennings Brecht on May 1, 1937, at Hot Springs, S.D. The couple then moved to the Dead Horse area southwest of Chadron where they farmed until 1999. During that time, she was employed by Bump Abstract Company at Chadron, retiring in 1978 In 1999, the couple moved Prairie Pines Retirement Community in Chadron, where they resided until Mr. Brecht's death in 2000. In November 2000, she moved to Good Samaritan Towers in Alliance. She was an member of the Rose Hill Extension Club, VFW, BPOE Does, "Turtle Club" and American Legion Auxiliary, and board member of the Dawes County Farm & Ranch Museum. She also was involved with the Blood Bank, Girls and Boys State, and Chadron State College. As a supporter of CSC's foreign student program, she was instrumental in bringing the first overseas students to the campus. She financially sponsored and "adopted" many foreign college students, including the Pak and Tewehade families.
She is survived by two brothers, Raymond Mundt and Arley Mundt, both of Alliance. Mrs. Brecht's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.
