Robert Tonkin, 75, of 9 Broadview Drive, South Hanover Twp., died Friday at home.

He retired as a Conrail general foreman; had been foreman at the former Reading Railroad's Rutherford Rail House; was a graduate of Scranton High School; an Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of a Bronze star and two Purple Hearts; a past president of the Hummelstown Optimist Club; and a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church of Hershey, Hummelstown VFW Post 1687, American Legion Post 1001, Middletown Elks Lodge 1092, Hershey Italian Lodge, Quentin Riding Club, Reading Railroad Historical Society and National Association of Veteran Railroad Employees.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Shearer Tonkin; four sons, Robert J. Jr. of Highspire, William J. of Easton, Richard J. of Newville and Barry J. of Hummelstown; a brother, William H. of Scranton; and nine grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Hummelstown. Burial, with military honors, will be in Stoverdale Cemetery, Derry Twp.

Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Comfort Care Hospice, 115 S. Filbert St., Mechanicsburg 17055.
