Elizabeth H. Appel, 98, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Homestead Village, Lancaster. Born in Tyrone, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edwin S. and Margaret Shuman Hooker. Elizabeth was married to the late Honorable Anthony R. Appel.

She graduated from Grier School in 1932 and graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in 1936.

Elizabeth was a member of Church of the Apostles, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lancaster, Past Board President of the Susquehanna Association of the Blind, former board member and secretary of the Lancaster Guidance Clinic, and the YWCA. She was a member of the Lancaster Country Club and The Hamilton Club. She volunteered her time and talents to innumerable organizations, in particular, the Rockford Foundation and the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.

She is survived by her two children: Andrew H. Appel of Pequea, PA and Harriet A. wife of E. Allen Breuninger of Wyncote, PA; three grandchildren: George R., husband of Alisha Breuninger, of Royersford, PA, E. Anthony, husband of Jaclyn Breuninger, of Oreland, PA, and E. Andrew Breuninger of Berwyn, PA; two great-grandchildren: Graham R. and Alistair M. Breuninger; and two sisters: Margaret H. West of Coronado, CA and Sarah H. Wagner, wife of Dr. Richard S., of Willow Street, PA. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin S. Hooker, Jr.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Elizabeth's Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, with The Reverend Dave Longenecker officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Private interment will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Elizabeth's name to Millersville University, Development Office, PO Box 1002, Millersville, PA 17551, with the notation for the Appel Family Scholarship.
