BARGERSVILLE, Ind. -
Services for Custer Baker, 76, Johnson County educator nearly 50 years, will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Providence Christian Church.

Baker died yesterday in his home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been in failing health six months.

Last year Baker was honored when the Franklin middle school, now under construction was named for him.
He served 31 years as Johnson County superintendent of schools. He also taught and coached at Union and Center Grove Schools.

Baker was born in Muncie, the son of Sherman and Dessie Baker. The family moved to Johnson County when he was 2. He remained in Johnson county throughout his life.

He attended the one room Fairview Elementary School near his home and graduated from Union High School in 1918. He attended Franklin College 11 years, teaching and coaching during the winter, and attending classes during the summer.

After graduation in 1929, he taught and coached both at Union and Center grove schools before returning to the Union school as principal.

In 1933, Baker was appointed superintendent of Johnson County schools. He retired July 1, 1974.

He received his master's degree from Butler University in 1942. In 1956 he received an honorary doctorate from Franklin College.

Baker was director of Union Bank & Trust co. at Franklin for 25 years. He was named an honorary member of the board Jan. 1, 1975.

He had been a member of the Johnson County Plan Commission and Johnson County Board of Health. During the administration of Gov. Roger Branigin, he was a member of the Indiana State School Reorganization Committee.

Baker was also a former president of the Indiana School Superintendents Association and Franklin Kiwanis Club. He was a 50-year member and a former master of Union village Masonic lodge, elder of Providence Christian Church and member of Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis.

Survivors - wife, Jessie; sons Noel, Tim, John, Stephen; daughters Mrs. O.J. Sloop, Mrs. Mary Lynn Yates, and Mrs. Joseph Carter.
