After being rejected by the US Army for World War I service, he went to Canada and joined the Royal Flying Corps (Royal Air Force). He spent approximately a year overseas in a seaplane squadron.
While driving on the Brunswick Pike near Trenton, NJ, Crater lost control of his Paige touring car. It hit a pole and Crater was fatally injured. His two passengers survived. His father and an uncle went to Trenton to arrange for his body to be returned to Easton.
He was survived by his parents, his brothers Joseph of New York City (later to mysteriously disappear) and Montague of Easton, and a sister, Margaret (Mrs. George Henry) in Rochester, NY.
Crater was an active Mason, a charter member of the Sparta Club, and a member of First M.E. Church.
