Burial will be in Denmark Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening, Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Mercer Funeral Home. Dodd was Born November 24, 1920 at the home of his paternal grandparents in Red Springs, N. C. and died September 27, 2001 in Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. He was the son of Philip Doddridge Buie Sr. and Grace Salley Buie, who moved their family to Denmark when Dodd was quite young.
After attending Denmark schools, Dodd entered Clemson College and completed three years before he entered the Army in 1943. His service included stays at Fort Jackson, Camp Croft and Fort Benning and assignment to the 138th Combat Engineers, where he taught map reading, weapons and demolition. He was transferred to Scotland, where he received advance training in Bailey bridges (an Army prefabricated, crossing bridge), so necessary to the advancement of our troops in Europe in World War II. He was transferred to the mainland of Europe where he engaged in Bailey bridge maintenance and in extensive minefield clearing, sometimes operating as a one-man team.
After the war, Dodd returned to Clemson College, graduated in 1947 with a B. S. degree in Industrial Education. He was a member of the South Carolina National Guard and retired in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Commander of the Bamberg Post while he was a guardsman. His career also included teaching at Denmark High School and serving as head of training at Milliken and Co., Barnwell Plant.
Loyalty, integrity, dedication and devotion were Dodd Buie's watchwords. He loyally served his county. He rendered dedicated service to his beloved Denmark Presbyterian Church by his support and also by his tenure as a deacon, elder and trustee. His sterling character was always evident in every facet of his work. He was a loving, devoted husband and father. May God grant Dodd an abundant reward for his beautiful life of service on earth.
