Bobby Todd, a Germantown city employee whose fight against leukemia brought the city together for numerous fund-raising efforts, died Thursday, May 20, at the age of 36.
Bobby's death came less than a year after an attempted bone marrow transplant. The transplant later failed and eventually led to his death.
Bobby's wife, Loren, said Bobby fought hard to survive. The transplant was a high risk procedure and the odds were against him.
Services were at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Collierville where he was a communicant. Burial in Memorial Park.
He was a member of the Memphis Scottish Society and the American Waterworks Association. He worked for the Germantown public utilities for 15 years.
Mr. Todd's leukemia was discovered in November 1990 during follow up testing for thyroid cancer he developed in 1975. His battle against the disease turned into a community wide effort to raise funds for the city employees. There was a professional wrestling match, a bone marrow drive and a garage sale by city employees to raise money for the Organ Transplant Fund in his name. There were other collections by city employees to help with the expenses associated with the transplant.
Bobby was at every event and working like everybody else. Hi did not sit back and wait for a handout.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Todd was survived by a son, Malcolm William Todd; a sister, Diane Todd Pace of Dallas, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman E. Todd of Memphis.
