Howard M. Grundy Jr., 89, of Burr Ridge, IL, formerly of DeKalb, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Manor Care Health Services, Hinsdale. Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Creston, the son of Howard M. Grundy Sr. and Esther Evaline (Houghtby) Grundy, he married Smiljana (Mildred) Eror on Aug. 2, 1947, in Sycamore. A 1939 graduate of DeKalb High School, where he played varsity basketball, he was a veteran of the Army Air Force, having served in World War II as part of the 8th Air Force in Europe, from 1940-1945. He was employed by Wurlitzer Piano Co. in DeKalb and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in DeKalb, the Shiners' of Rockford, American Legion Post 66 and Fraternal Order of Elks of DeKalb, and Sons of Norway. He is survived by his children, Howard O. "Skip" (Sandra) Grundy of Burr Ridge and Sophia Peters of Lake Delavan, WI; grandchildren, Bethany Anne Peters, Jeffrey Allan (Paula) Peters; great-grandchildren, Emily, Abby, Alexander and Andrew Peters; niece, Jodi (Jim) Winslow and her children, Mark and Brian and nephew, Doug Burchard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Smiljana (Mildred), in 1995; parents; son-in-law, Allan; and three sisters, Gladys, Dorothy and Emma Jean. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Craig E. Nelson of Calvary Lutheran Church, Lee, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb, with full military rites provided by DeKalb County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Anderson Funeral Home.
