Mattie was the daughter of Hattie Mae Vail and Osborne Quarles; granddaughter of Sarah Viola Lewter and James Monroe Vail and J. Harold Quarles and Emma Carson; and great-granddaughter of Henry Vail and Dollie Ann Elizabeth Blalock and Henry Lewter and Ardilla Coleman. She married Willie M. Anderson, son of Annie Nash and Jimmie Anderson, on July 5, 1930 in Jackson Parish. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary (picture taken July 5, 1980). Children: Wilma Maxine (Stuckey), Verneda Bess (Pardue, Harper), Joy Jeannette (Bell, Gates), Shirley Ann (Matthewes), Emma Carolyn (Woods, Lydstone) and Jimmie Osborne Anderson.
