The 1880 Federal Census for Washington, District of Columbia, Family 47, shows Emma J. Carpenter [age 27, born in Virginia], with her husband Thomas M. Carpenter [age 37, born in Ohio], and their three children William [age 7, born in District of Columbia]; Samuel [age 4, born in District of Columbia]; Anna B. [age 2, born in District of Columbia]. Thomas worked as a clerk for the Treasury Department and Emma is listed as Keeping House.

It is possible that Emma gave birth to another son, 22 March 1881, in Washington, D.C., but he wasn't listed on the 1900 Federal census with her. The District of Columbia, Births & Christenings for 1830-1955, shows a male child was born to a Thomas M. and Emma J. Carpenter. No first name was given for the child.

A death was recorded for a Thomas M. Carpenter, in Washington, D. C., on 22 Nov. 1888, with a birth year as 1844. He was listed as married, occupation of builder, but the name of his spouse was not give. [Source: "District of Columbia Deaths and Burials, 1840-1964, index, FamilySearch." This Thomas may or may not have been Emma J. Carpenter's husband.]

The 1900 Federal Census shows Emma Carpenter, age 46, widowed, working as a clerk for the Government Dept., and living with her are son William, working as a printer, and daughter Belle, working as a copyist, typewriter, and they are all in Washington, D.C.

In 1910 Emma is living with her daughter, Anna B. Henney and her husband Charles H. Henney, in Washington, District of Columbia. In 1920 Emma is shown in the household of her son William S. Carpenter and his wife Minnie M. Carpenter, in Washington, District of Columbia. There is a city directory record of Emma being in Portland, Oregon, living in the home of Charles H. and Anna Belle Henney in 1916 and 1921. On the WW1 Draft Card Registration for her son Samuel Thomas Carpenter, at Camp Humphreys, Virginia, lists his nearest relative as Emma J. Carpenter in Portland, Oregon. The full name of Emma's sons, and their dates of birth, according to the WW1 Draft Card Registration in 1918, shows Willaim Stewart Carpenter, born 25 Dec. 1873 and Samuel Thomas Carpenter, born 22 August 1875. William was a printer for the US Government and Samuel was a Steam Fitter for the US Government.

Emma J. Carpenter is buried next to, on the left, of her daughter, Anna Belle Henney, in an older section of Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, called Sunset. The year of birth on the gravestone reads 1852, but the 1900 Federal Census showed 1853.
