He immigrated to the US sometime before 1831 and married Margaret Wilson. Matthew and Margaret had five children: Mary Jane (Wilson), Matthew, Martha (Roberts), Ann and a baby girl who died at birth.
He was buried at Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA on Oct 8, 1887.
