Early in life Glory worked at the famed Waldorf-Astoria with several sisters and brothers. She worked in room service and knew Cole Porter, who was living in the Waldorf Tower. One day he played one of his newly composed songs called "I Concentrate on You" to see what Glory thought. She obviously loved the tune and after that, Mr. Porter often enjoyed playing these songs privately for her for the first time to seek her opinion.
She came west at the end of World War 2 and lived in Santa Maria for a few years, being a hostess at a Chinese restaurant, then later as a bookeeper. She then moved to Hollywood and lived in the Silverlake district. She worked at "Sunset News" with her sister Alma in the early 1950s. She adored the French language and she learned to speak the language fluently. She sang songs in the style of the Parisian singer Edith Piaf so convincingly, many of those who met Glory actually thought she was from France. Glory and her 5 sisters had a night club act called "The Santos Sisters" during the early 1950s.
A great lover of food and people, she always had a smile on her face and had a grand sense of humor.
In the late 1950s, she married Joe O'Day and later in the 1960s, she co-managed the Lakewood, California Country Club Restaurant, then a while later bought a restaurant nearby, which was named as a play on her name... it was an Italian restaurant and called "GLORY-O's"... and it was a big hit.
In her senior years she handed out thousands of free samples of food in grocery stores and loved chatting with the hundreds of people she met.
I never knew a braver soul who faced her pending demise with more courage and bravery. She passed away in her beloved Rancho Bernardo, just north of San Diego.
She adored the singer Celine Dion and the song "My Heart Shall Go On" and a quote from that song is on her gravestone. Glory's mother was Marcella Santos, who also has a memorial here on "findagrave.com".
Glory is survived by her husband of many years Joe O'Day, her son Jerry and her sisters Lucy and Lita. Also many nieces, nephews and in-laws who loved her smile and great lasagna dinners.
Glory's husband Joe died in 2010 in Pennsylvania, where he was living with his family, so his remains were cremated and they remain there to this day.
