Joseph was the son of Eliza Newman and William Edward Jones. He married Eliza Jane Robb on April 15 1888. Together they had ten children: Susannah, Estella, Mary Eliza, Jennie LaVerne, Maude, Josephine, Mabel Cecelia, Rowena, Blaine J., and Ruth.

Jink was a well rounded man, working at several jobs to provide for his family. He was a successful freighter, worked in a gold mill, and worked in a saw mill. He also helped build and maintain roads. He was an athlete in his younger days, a blacksmith, and enjoyed repairing things from farm equipment to children's toys.
