MRS. WOOD, 86, DIES; FUNERAL ON WEDNESDAY
Came To Manitowoc County In 1853 From Switzerland; Knew The Indians
Mrs. Mary Wood, 86, who came to this county in the log cabin days when Indians
often stopped at the farm home for supplies, died early today at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Henry Petersen, North Eighth street. She had been making her
home with her daughter for several years.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. from the Shimek and Schwartz
funeral home and at 9 a.m. from the Sacred Heart church. Interment will be at
Evergreen cemetery.
Born Mary Mathey in Switzerland in 1848, she came to Wisconsin with her parents
when a girl of five years. The family settled near Mishicot. Slow moving oxen were
the principal motive power in those days and dwellings were made of huge logs hewn
from the virgin timber.
Mrs. Wood told many stories of Indians calling at the farm houses in search of
bread and returning later with berries and wild fruit to pay for these supplies.
Her first marriage was to John Perrodin and took place at Two Rivers. Her second
was to Henry Wood and took place at Cooperstown. Both husbands are dead. For the
last 25 years she lived in this city.
Survivors are the daughter, Mrs. Henry Petersen, city; three sons, Edward Wood of
this city, Alex Perrodin of Wisconsin Rapids and Mirris Perrodin of Goodrich, Wis.
There are two sisters, Mrs. Louise Abbott of Francis Creek and Mrs. Louise Greenwood
of Mishicot, 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the Shimek and Schwartz funeral home tonight and on Tuesday.
