Louis Westphal, 86 (photo), lifelong resident of the city, died this
morning after a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Urbanek and Schlei
funeral home the Rev. A.C. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
cemetery.
Mr. Westphal claimed the distinction of being the oldest citizen here who
was born in Manitowoc. The pioneer was a harbor building and millwright.
From 1876 to 1888 he was in the employ of the federal government building
harbors on both shores of Lake Michigan. After he quit the lake he went
into the butcher business and operated an establishment here 10 years.
He worked as a millwright 40 years being employed at the Aluminum Goods
company and Aluminum Specialty ocmpany (sic). He was a charter member of
the Royal league. He was married 64 years ago and his wife died 16 years
ago.
His children are Albert and Emil Westphal, Mrs. Minnie Neuser and Mrs. Emma
Ruppelt, of this city, Mrs. Della Retzlaff, Mrs. Etta Meitzel, and Mrs. Helen
Kitzerow, of Milwukee and Arthur Westphal of Neenah-Menasha.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home after Thursday noon.
