STREICH DEATH LEAVES BUT ONE SURVIVOR NOW
Paul Reiderer Only Survivor of First Fire Company Here,
With Passing of Gustave Streich
With the death yesterday at the hospital here of Gustave Streich, 84, pioneer
resident of the city, there is now but one survivor of the first volunteer fire
company in Manitowoc. He is Paul Reiderer, South Tenth street. Up to the time
of Mr. Streich's death they were the two remaining survivors of the volunteer
fire company that was organized here in the early village days of Manitowoc.
Mr. Streich's death on Wednesday afternoon followed a month's confinement in the
Holy Family hospital, where he gradually failed from a throat infection.
Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Wattawa
and Urbanek chapel with burial at Evergreen.
Lived a Retired Life
For the past several years Mr. Streich has been living a retired life, making his
home with his son, the late Charles Streich, 1209 South Fourteenth street, and
continuing to live there with his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charles Streich. The
deceased was the operator of the first dray line in Manitowoc, and in many ways
was identified with the early day business life of the community.
Establish First Dray Line
Born in Germany, January 17, 84 years ago, the deceased came to America with
his parents at an early age. The family first settled at Milwaukee, and after
a few years residence there moved to Manitowoc. Here Mr. Streich grew up and
engaged in business. He established the first dray line in the city and was one
of the organizers and members of the first volunteer fire department in the city.
He was married here to Miss Minnie Reitz, who preceded him in death ten years
ago.
After Mr. Streich retired from the dray business he was employed for a number of
years by the city, and ten years ago retired to private life. He is survived by
one daughter, Mrs. Albert Neubauer, three sons, Emil, of this city, Otto and
George of Chicago, and one sister, Mrs. Lacompty of Montague, Mich., and fourteen
great grandchildren.
The Wattawa and Urbanek chapel will be open tonight until 10 o'clock and tomorrow
up to the time of the funeral for these desiring to view the remains.
