This Edwin R. Smith was not the same man as Edwin R. Smith found in Manitowoc bios. He was not the principal of the school. This Edwin R. Smith has an obituary that can be found via the Manitowoc website under Evergreen Cemetery. He was born in Covington, NY, as you have; came to Michigan as a child; married Hester Ann Westbrook in China Township, St. Clair Co., Michigan, 13 April 1845; went to Manitowoc in 1852 where he first operated a hotel and then a mercantile business until 1873 when he purchased a farm outside of town. He was the father of three children, Reuben, Albert and Jenny Alice
