FRIEDRICH RUSBOLDT

CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENT DIES AT AGE OF 96
Life Span of F. Rusboldt Covered Near Century
Manitowoc's oldest resident is dead. Fred Rusboldt, aged 96 years, 3 months
and 13 days, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Stahl, Division
street, between the hours of 5 and 6 o'clock this morning, following an illness
which has kept him confined to the home for some weeks. His condition was not
considered serious, however, and his end came peacefully and apparently without
suffering.
The life of Mr. Rusboldt is unusual in that he has lived in two centuries,
covering almost all of the one and a decade of the second. In his time, he had
been privileged to witness the development of the national life, to see the
remarkable progress that has been made in transportation facilities, the advent
of the telephone, the coming of the electric street cars, the flying machines,
etc. It has been a wonderful age and the life and death of the man exemplify
this. At the funeral Wednesday a fine motor hearse will take the casket to the
cemetery and the casket itself will be an example of modern artisanship such as
was not dreamed of even thirty years ago. Mr. Rusboldt enjoyed during his life
a privilege in the march of progress that can be safely said will be enjoyed by
few of the present generation or possibly its followers.
Fred Rusboldt was born in Germany, September 26, 1825, and was married in that
country. Like all other Germans of that time he was compelled to serve his time
in the army and after the regular term of service was married. He was recalled
to the colors for the German wars and after the close came to this country in
1865 with his wife and three children, coming directly to Manitowoc to settle.
Here he has since made his home and has been employed as a laborer until
advancing years compelled him to retire. He was a brickmaker by trade and held
the reputation of being one of the best of the craft.
Until three years ago Mr. Rusboldt was always active and took daily walks about
the city but for the last three years has remained at home but was still up and
about the house. Eighteen years ago his wife preceded him in death. He is
survived by three daughters, Mrs. Sophia Albrecht, Mrs. Ricka Allen and Mrs.
Charles Stahl and by two sons, Charles of this city and Henry of Two Rivers.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the Stahl home, the Rev. Karl
Machmiller officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen.
