EMIL B. PANOSH

Emil B. Panosh (photo), former assistant fire chief of the Manitowoc department,
who retired in 1945, died Wednesday night at his home, 618 North Fourth street.
Today would have been his 61st birthday.
Mr. Panosh had been in failing health for six years. He suffered a serious hip
injury while fighting a residence fire on Michigan avenue in 1940 and was
hospitalized several months before he was able to return to active duty.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian church,
the Rev. C. H. Phipps officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
He was born in Kewaunee in 1886 and later moved to Lena coming to Manitowoc 40
years ago and joining the department here. Thirty-eight years ago he married Miss
Emma Trochil of this city.
He entered the department as a pipeman in 1907 and was named a lieutenant in 1910.
He was out of the department two years in 1912 but returned and was named a captain
in 1919. His promotion to assistant chief came in 1938. He retired in February,
1945.
Mr. Panosh was a member of the Eagles, the Z.C.B.J. lodge and the Equitable Fraternal
Union.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Woyral of this city, and Mrs.
Otto Hagen of Ludington; three sons, Alvin, Dale and Orville, all of this city;
two brothers, Miles of this city, Joseph of Operton, Wis.; and four grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home after Friday noon and
will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to lie in state until the hour of
services.
